As the weather has calmed down and the wind and rain made way for the frost we decided it would be a fantastic morning for a learning walk.

We noticed everything felt very cold and was covered in white. “Jack Frost has been making it frosty this morning” The children learned this wasn’t snow but tiny bits of water had frozen on everything when it got very cold overnight. The children enjoyed running in the big field listening to it crack under their feet.

We then found a big frozen puddle. The children learned that it used to be a big water puddle but because it got so cold the water had frozen into ice. We talked about why we should stay safe near ice, “It is like glass”
“We might slip and hurt ourselves”
We decided it’s best stay off the ice because even if we don’t slip the ice might break and we could fall into very cold and deep water. We found a bit of ice that had no water under it and showed the children how it easily breaks.

On the way back to nursery the children passed the gruffalo’s house, heard a very busy woodpecker and had to walk up a “big mountain” to get back to our cosy nursery.
